Jeremy Xtravaganza

Last night I shot The Colony Club's White Glove Gone Wild fundraiser for Art Production Fund.  The headlining act was Jeremy Xtravaganza of The House of Xtravaganza. He performed a vogue inspired piece with two back up dancers and they truly energized the space!

I was originally planning to do a slideshow of the performance but I find myself drawn most to the behind the scenes shots.  This shot feels like the essence of something I don't know how to put my finger on.

I have to say Jeremy gave good face all around but I think what I like best about some of the behind the scenes moments was that he was very much in the moment.  Very much free to be me if you will.  I don't think it moved him one way or the other that I was standing there he just did his thing- which I dig.

Clark is a phenomenal actor, insightful teacher and a great all around guy.
Even though it's still a bit cold we had a great time shooting outdoors to make use of the beautiful New York light.
You can see Clark in the upcoming Sci Fi blockbuster Snowpiercer in which he stars alongside Tilda Swinton and Octavia Spenser!

Great shoot last night at The Rock Shop in Brooklyn

I had a great time shooting at The Rock Shop last night in Brooklyn.  I experimented with a faster shutter and I liked the results.  That being said I had read an article during the day about a Nikon photographer who brought his ISO up to 8000 and used noise reduction in post to get great shots without flash.  My intention for the night was to go without flash.
That lasted all of 15 minutes.  I couldn't take missing the shots and I am just not sure my Canon can do it.  I brought it up to the max (6400) and the shots were utterly unusable and as we all know with bands there are only so many songs, only so many moments available to catch so I didn't want to screw around.

This shot was taken after the band performance was over.  The lead singer of the band (Jeanine Moss) and I were chatting and I just had to pull my gear back out.  I loved the light.. I loved her positioning.. I loved that I had her still for a minute LOL.  Doesn't hurt that she is gorge.  I haven't even offloaded the rest of the images yet but I know this one to be one my favorite.  I like it best full size.  If you would like to see it full size just click!

IN MY FIRST SHOW!!

When I started shooting I decided to adopt an attitude of YES.  I would enjoy what I was doing and if opportunities came my way I would say yes and see what happens.  Soon after I started shooting a friend suggested I submit some of my photos to The Sun.  I did and I was thrilled to find they accepted a photo for publication.  Then came offers to buy prints and asks to hire me for event photography.  I ended up shooting for Blackbook and doing a series for Occupy on and on.  It's been fun!
I hoped to do a show at some point but it was not something I expected to do for some time.  That being said I've been asked to do a show in July and I've said YES!  I will be alongside some incredible photographers so I am a tad intimidated to place my work in the same room as theirs but it's always best to be in better company I think:).   I will list the photographers I will be sharing the space with once their names go online.
For anyone in LA the show will be at The Gabba Gallery in Echo Park July 13th.

I am not a wedding photographer.  I am not a headshot photographer either but that's another story.  I always appreciate being asked and it is lovely to be offered work no matter the form.:)
That being said I DO do weddings.. Confusing, yes?  It is for me too.  The thing is I need not only to be able to do what I do freely but also I need to have some kind of connection to the couple.  I want to be at that wedding with the burning desire to bring out every meaningful moment and capture it on film.  Without that burning desire I don't know that I could do my best work and I know I wouldn't enjoy it.  What gets me off about shooting is getting the decisive moment, it's getting something someone else didn't see.  Ultimately this works for me and it works for the client.  It just also leads me to sometimes saying no.
All this being said I do have my next wedding booked.  I am shooting a beautiful couple in NYC mid June.  They compliment each other well and are involved in changing the world in positive ways (more on that later), what could be better?  I am already thinking of new techniques and feeling that slight bit of anxiousness that I want to make sure it is covered as best as possible.   This is a good sign.  This means it is the right couple.

Lacquer or not to lacquer

A girlfriend came in from out of town to do an experiment with a raven mask she had bought on etsy.  We decided the Brooklyn Bridge, symbolic of the bridge between worlds, would be a great place to shoot this human/raven embodiment.  After I started working on

Picture
the photos I knew it was time to break out the lacquer.  I had some on hand for when the time was right.  To the right  you will find an option with the extra layer and to the left  without.  I think I am partial to the lacquer but it's hard to choose they both seem to offer something different.
